The
Art Gallery of NSW at the east end of The Domain overlooks the Royal
Botanic Gardens, Woolloomooloo and Garden Island. The classic revival
building designed by Walter Liberty Vernon commemorates ancient
greek temples. It was opened in 1885. In 1988 (the year of Australia's
200th anniversary) the Art Gallery was expanded.

The
largest exhibition area of the gallery is the art collection of australian
artists. |
It
contains exhibits from the early colonial days to the middle of the
20th century, e.g. the oil painting "Portrait of a woman (Elizabeth
Collins)" 1861 painted by Joseph Backler, who lived in Australia
from 1813 to 1895. |

Later works (after 1960) of australian and foreign artists can
be found in the Contemporary Gallery. In addition to this the Art
Gallery of NSW shows the greatest collection of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander art (the Yiribana Gallery) and prized collection
of european and asian art and photographs.
In the Art Gallery Australia's most important contest take place,
e.g. the Archibald Award for Portrait and the Wynne, Sulman
and Dobell Awards. Furthermore it is one of the locations for
festivals like the Biennale of Sydney.
