The name "Glebe" means benefices of a minister. 1789 chaplain Richard Johnson and his wife Mary got assigned 125 hectares of land by Governor Phillip.

Along the streets - many of them lead down to the harbour - still stand more or less well preserved terraced houses.

Sydney - Leichhardt - GlebeAt the harbourfront of the Glebe Point Road the mansions of the rich were built in the 19th century, while the working class houses rather stand near the Parramatta Road. The population is still as multifaceted as in the past.

gA great number of restaurants, cafes, and pubs provide a buzz of activity in Glebe. Every Saturday the Glebe Market takes place here. You can find things from new age articles to second hand goods, jewellery, knickknackery and everything for true gourmets here and in the nearby shops.
